GM’s improved Head-Up Display system to help drive smoothly in zero visibility

There had been efforts in the past to make driving safer with the help of technology. Those efforts still continue. Talking about GM’s Head-Up Display (HUD) is something we all are familiar with and saw it already in Corvette, Cadillac STS, Buick.

There had been efforts in the past to make driving safer with the help of technology. Those efforts still continue. Talking about GM’s Head-Up Display (HUD) is something we all are familiar with and saw it already in Corvette, Cadillac STS, Buick Lacrosse and GMC Acadia.

However, those were the primitive ones compared to GM’s next generation HUD that are augmented with the lasers and cameras to enhance the navigation at the night time or even when there is dense fog. This enhanced vision system is designed to keep in mind the driving safety and to take the concept to a whole new level with the latest in the technology.

As a result GM R&D, Carnegie Mellon University, The University of Southern California, and other institutions are collaborating to create a full windshield head-up system that turns up the windshield system into a device that keeps driver aware of his vicinity and his eyes on the road.

The whole navigation works with many front-facing sensors and inbuilt cameras that track and drivers head and eyes to properly place the augmented reality layer on transparent phosphors embedded in the windshield.

The current HUD uses only a small portion of the windscreen but new concept entire screen combined with automated sign reading technology and alerts the driver of speed, construction, or any other impending situation. The new development seems promising and can help you drive smoothly even when there is zero visibility.
