We spend a lot of time at Cars.com dissecting the practicalities of SUVs and family sedans, but sometimes track numbers are just too overthetop to go unshared. We're at the Midwest Automotive Media Association's fall rally in Joliet, Ill., and GM just laid down some astonishing numbers on the redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The 650-horsepower, supercharged Z06 hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and scorches the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds — with the manual transmission. With the automatic, the car eclipses the very exclusive sub-3-second club, hitting 60 mph in 2.95 seconds and nailing the quarter-mile in 10.95 seconds. That's the quickest production car GM says it's ever produced.

How quick is 10.95 seconds? Well, consider that when Car and Driver magazine tested a Bugatti Veyron in 2005 — at the time the 1,001-hp, $1.25 million all-wheel-drive godfather of all supercars — it ran the quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds. And today's Z06 starts at less than $79,000. It's little surprise that GM just took its first orders and the automaker is already overwhelmed, particularly since the car pulls 1.2 g lateral acceleration and stops from 60 mph in an impossible 99.6 feet, Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter told reporters.
"We got 5,600 orders," Juechter said. "That's far more than we can produce."
Stick-shift cars should hit dealerships in December, while the automatic will begin rolling off the factory line in January 2015.
"If you don't already have your order into the dealer, it's probably going to be later," Jeuchter added.
Would we like to drive one? That's a silly question.
