Confirming swirling rumors, Mazda has announced a new small crossover for next month's 2014 Los Angeles show: the CX-3.
Presumably based on the hot, next-generation 2 subcompact car, the CX-3 will face down a raft of new tiny utelets when it reaches market, including the Chevrolet Trax, the Fiat 500X, the Jeep Renegade, and the Honda HR-V.
Being based on the 2, the CX-3 may offer a 1.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder as its base engine. Front-wheel drive is sure to be standard, while all-wheel drive will certainly be available. It's unknown if Mazda's 2.0-liter unit—slated for the U.S.-market version of the next Miata, which will also appear in L.A.—will find its way under the crossover's hood, but we think that's likely, particularly with AWD versions.

The 2016 2 is slated to also share its architecture and powertrain with the next Toyota Yaris, and both of those cars will be assembled in a new Mazda plant in Mexico. The CX-3 is likely to join that fiesta, as the tariff advantages and lower labor costs will allow the small Japanese firm to bolster the typically razor-thin profit margins on tiny vehicles like this one. And for what it's worth, Mazda also announced plans to show updated versions of its 6 mid-size sedan and CX-5 crossover.
