Chrysler is recalling 566,000 SUVS and pickups for faulty airbags, a stability control flaw, and leaking diesel fuel.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango have airbag modules that can short-circuit due to a manufacturing defect on the circuit board. As a result, the front airbags, side airbags and seat belt pretensioners could be disabled; if so, a warning light should appear on the instrument cluster. Chrysler said it noticed a higher defect rate for these airbag modules in January and July last year; in August 2013, the supplier Bosch redesigned a coating on the circuit board that fixed the problem. Through Sept. 5 of this year, Chrysler said, it had received 2558 warranty claims for this airbag issue. A total of 126,722 vehicles are affected in the U.S. Dealers will replace the airbag module starting in December.
Most of these same vehicles are affected by a separate recall concerning another circuit board that controls the stability control. On these models—a total of 132,223 are in the U.S.—a cover protecting the circuit board can "inadvertently disrupt a communication line" and disable stability control. Chrysler said a software update would be available starting next month.
On 2010-2014 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, an electrical connector on the fuel heater assembly can overheat. This can cause an O-ring to fail on the fuel filter, which can lead to a fuel leak. As of September, Chrysler said it had recorded 233 warranty claims for this issue, which was apparently due to corrosion of the tin-plated connector terminals. Dealers will replace the connectors with new ones plated in silver starting in December. No injuries or accidents have been reported for any of the three recalls mentioned.

Two weeks earlier, Chrysler recalled more than 786,000 cars in the U.S. to fix failing alternators, power mirrors with faulty electrical connectors that could start a fire, airbag sensors, and head restraints. In July, Chrysler recalled 895,000 SUVs for vanity mirror fires. The 2011-2014 Durango and Grand Cherokee were included in both recalls.
