Thermal Dynamics: BMW Opening Performance Center West Driving School in California

BMW M School M5

Hot-shoe Bimmerphiles, listen up: BMW is set to open a second U.S. driving school, and it will be located much closer to the automaker's hoards of west coast disciples. The new BMW driving school's digs? The posh new Thermal Club private motorsports playplace near Palm Springs, California.

BMW's dedicated facilities will swallow up 32 acres of the Thermal Club park, once construction is completed, and will eventually include a 1.4-mile road course, 6.2 acres of paddock space, a skid pad, and an 8500-square-foot home base (classroom space and the un-sexily named "Performance Facility"). BMW expects that the driving course, paddock, and skid pad will be finished by the end of the year, and classes should begin by the end of the year in temporary facilities. The entirety of BMW's on-site facilities are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2015.

BMW Performance Center West Building Plan

BMW says that the full raft of driving programs currently offered at the existing BMW Performance Center driving school in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is also expected to be offered at the Performance Center West. We tried out the company's M driving school at the original South Carolina location, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while also learning a thing or two; we suspect similar excellence from the new California branch.

BMW spokesman Dave Buchko tells us that while prices for the classes are still being worked out, pricing for the west school isn't expected to stray far, if at all, from those found at the South Carolina location. Currently, BMW offers one- and two-day car control clinics ($700–$1200), one- and two-day teen driving schools ($550–$950), one- and two-day BMW M schools ($1450–$3595), and the Advanced BMW M school (currently $4600–$5000). A representation of BMW's full model range will be used for instruction, and motorcycle schools could also be offered at the Performance Center West.

Of course, instruction at the Performance Center West won't come with a tour of an adjacent BMW factory or BMW museum—as it does in Spartanburg—but it will come with, oh yeah, California.

  1. Well, BMW is my most favorite car and it’s my dream to buy this car one day. But before buying I have started learning driving from a well-known Port Macquarie Driving School. I am learning how to drive safely, and they are telling me every driving rule. I am going to drive on main road from next week and I am very excited for that.
