September's Fastest and Slowest Selling Cars

2015Toyota4Runner

Sales were up in September for most automakers as the 2015 model year starts to become more prevalent throughout the country's car dealerships. This is the time of year that many popular nameplates from BMW, Toyota and Honda, for example, switch to the new model year. This move definitely had an impact our list of the fastest-selling cars.

As usual, the fastest-selling cars were made up of a lot of performance cars and luxury models. There also were a considerable number of new mainstream cars on the list, but almost all were Japanese models such as the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. Only seven of the top 25 fastest-selling cars were from domestic automakers and two of those seven were both Cadillac Escalades.

The average amount of time it took to sell a new car was 76 days in September. That's up from 69 days in August as well as the 69 days it took in September 2013.

Boosting that number higher were super-slow sellers like the Infiniti Q60 coupe and convertible and the Dodge Viper. That supercar was selling so slowly that Dodge lowered the price of the upcoming 2015 by $15,000; it's now offering that much off a 2014 Viper to shoppers as well.

We found some good picks for people that like space — Lincoln's MKT and Nissan's Quest minivan — and fuel efficiency in the Ford C-Max Hybrid. With discounts, you can likely find the C-Max for less than a Toyota Prius these days.

About the Lists

The Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Cars list reports the average number of days it takes to sell models from the day they arrive on the lot until the final paperwork is signed by a buyer. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. With lots mostly clear of 2013 models, we look exclusively at 2014 and 2015 models.

For the fastest sellers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. To highlight all slow sellers, slowest sellers have no such threshold.

Our Picks highlight cars that take a significant time before they're sold and might be overlooked by shoppers. Dealers could be more motivated to sell these cars.
