Since debuting its little Fit-based subcompact SUV in Tokyo last year, Honda has done only two things that matter to Americans: confirmed that, yes, it would be sold here and announced that it would wear HR-V badging. here and told us it was going to be sold in America. Other than that, it's been radio silence—until today. At the 2014 Paris show, Honda has released some technical tidbits that might just be relevant to our market.
The U.S.-market HR-V has been expected to get some variant of the Fit's 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and it turns out that presumption was correct. In Europe, gas-powered HR-Vs will get a 1.5-liter "Earth Dreams" four paired with—please come to the U.S., please come to the U.S.—a six-speed manual or—please stay in Europe, please stay in Europe—a CVT automatic.
Honda still isn't saying how much power the 1.5-liter makes, nor has it specified the output for the Euro model's other available engine, a 1.6-liter diesel four. As you can imagine, the (manual-only!) diesel likely won't ever take a breath of American air. Figure on the gas-fed four making at least 130 horsepower, as it does in the Fit, and you can also look forward to the HR-V offering its sibling's flipping/folding Magic Rear seats and centrally located fuel tank.

The HR-V is scheduled to go on sale in Europe early next year, around the same time we expect to see it here in the States. We assume we'll have more detailed information by then.
