Mini Countryman Black Knight Edition Slips into Veracity Under Cloak of Darkness

2014 Mini John Cooper Works Paceman All4

Mini's new Frozen Black finish, modeled here by a Euro-market Paceman, will be available in America only on Black Knight Edition Countrymans.

Taking a page from the playbook of parent-company BMW, Mini is now offering a matte Frozen Black finish on several of its models. Available overseas on the Countryman, the Paceman (pictured above), diesel versions of the pair, and the John Cooper Works variants of both models, the matte-black finish will come to the U.S. exclusively as part of the Black Knight Edition Countryman S, which will be limited to 60 units nationwide.

Details are scarce regarding the U.S.-bound Black Knight—Mini's media site makes no mention of the limited-edition model nor has the brand responded to our requests for information—but one Mini dealership we spoke to confirmed the Black Knight Edition Countryman S is available for order, and will come with 18-inch black-spoke wheels, a black leather interior, and the badge-deleting package. Additionally, buyers have a choice between the six-speed automatic or the six-speed manual transmission, as well as an option of front- or all-wheel drive. We were told the Black Knight will be "fully loaded," but further pricing information was not provided.

Magna Steyr will handle paintwork at its facility in Graz, Austria, where the Countryman and Paceman are assembled. The labor-intensive process involved in applying the color is a factor in the limited production numbers.

The Black Knight Countryman may not be the Mini we need right now, but it's the one we deserve. (Come on, how can we resist not inserting a reference to Batman in a story about something called the Black Knight?)
