Contrary to appearances, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee—unibody construction, independent suspension, and all—actually is quite capable off road, at least in hard-core Trailhawk guise. But this is Jeep we're talking about, meaning there will always be brand die-hards eager for more ground clearance, more capability, and more bad-ass looks. To that end, Jeep has whipped up a special concept called the Trail Carver just for this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas to show what can be done to the green-behind-the-ears Cherokee.
Starting with a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk V-6 4×4 model, Jeep added a bevy of Mopar parts and bespoke touches to create the Trail Carver. Rock rails add underbody protection and knobby Firestone tires presumably provide more traction on the trails. A concept Mopar roof basket offers additional cargo space while also looking suitably cool, and the V-6 engine gets an injection of power from a cold-air intake and a cat-back exhaust system.

In the looks department, we're kicking ourselves over the Trail Carver's gorgeous Deep Auburn Pearl paint job, which appears to have been borrowed from the larger Grand Cherokee's color palette. Not only does the brown paint work surprisingly well with the Trailhawk's standard black-plastic body cladding, it even lives cohesively alongside the stuff Jeep painted bright orange—brake calipers, tow hooks, and accent striping on the hood—for more pop. Inside there's Katzkin leather on the seats, center console, and armrests, as well as a wireless phone charger and WiFi. It all comes together really well, and by far our favorite detail is the small, orange-colored Willys Jeep sticker that adorns the rim of each wheel. While it's not clear whether or not the Trail Carver previews a standalone Cherokee model, the majority of its upgrades could be available soon through the Mopar catalog.
