Walk into any Google office pretty much the globe over, and you'll see employees wandering the halls tapping their oddly shaped eyeglasses and speaking random commands at no one in particular. The strange, futuristic eyewear they're wearing is called Google Glass, a sort of personal head-up display Google cooked up for tech nerds. Mercedes-Benz, apparently, can count itself among the hardware's eager early adopters, and the automaker is developing an in-car integration for Google Glass at—where else—its new Silicon Valley technical center.
The system still is very much in the prototype stage, as Wired pointed out after trying the tech out for itself earlier this year. Its uses are also fairly limited, since Benz recognizes the potential for Glass to distract drivers. The in-car integration of Glass, therefore, so far offers only the ability to search for navigation destinations on Glass, save the destination, and when you get into your car, have it automatically downloaded to the navigation system via your Glass-linked smartphone. If upon arriving at your destination, the journey still requires a brief walk from the car, the system automatically transfers navigation directions back to Google Glass when you park and exit the car.

Mercedes tells us that at the moment, there's no firm timeline for when we could see Google Glass integration in a production car or what its capabilities might be. We think it's neat that the company is looking to get ahead of future technologies, and for those bent on head-up displays and Benzes, rest assured that the automaker is bringing a full-color, high-resolution projected driver display to the 2015 C-class—and it doesn't require odd-looking glasses to use.
