With the help of a turbocharged three-cylinder, one-liter engine, the recently renewed Ford Fiesta scored an EPA rating that puts the car in diesel country. When equipped with the SFE, or "Super Fuel Economy" package, the Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is rated at 32 mpg in the city and 45 on the highway. That's damn good, especially because the direct-injected engine under the hood still delivers 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Here's the really positive news, though: Those fuel-economy numbers are for a Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost with a five-speed stick. As of now, that's the only transmission the EPA shows is available with this three-cylinder engine, but we do believe Ford will offer its six-speed dual-clutch automatic—which should really be called Ford's six-slow dual-clutch transmission, given its unspectacular performance—at some point soon.

Those wanting an efficiency-oriented Fiesta with four cylinders can still get one, of course. The SFE package is also offered for Fiestas with the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine, and it rates highly, at 30/41. But wedged between the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine discussed above, and the hot turbocharged 1.6-liter four in the sporty Fiesta ST, this carryover naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-banger is looking feckless. The turbocharged three-cylinder makes three more horsepower and 36 more lb-ft of torque and is more efficient. For those who really want their Fiesta to haul, the Fiesta ST's turbocharged engine offers 197 horsepower and not-all-that-terrible fuel economy.
