Tesla Model X Crossover Is Finally Coming … In “Early 2016″

2016 Tesla Model XTesla Motors just quietly revealed some details about its long-awaited Model X crossover. According to the electric carmaker's website, the gullwinged family truckster will finally make its way into buyers hands in "early 2016." Yes, that means it's been delayed again, again.

A bit of chronology here: Tesla first showed the ModelX concept to the world in early 2012, referring to the crossover as a 2015 model that would hit the market in late 2014. Then the company pushed that delivery date to early 2015. Then the company started steering potential Model X customers into the Model S, which, y'know, they actually sell. Then the company said "third quarter 2015, for real this time."

Now, in a new listing on the Tesla Motors website, the company says newly-reserved Models X will arrive in early 2016. We're not entirely sure what this means for the people who previously put in reservations for the crossover—at the Detroit Auto Show this week, Musk revealed that the Model X's first year production run is entirely sold out. But if you're not already on the list, you ain't gettin' your gullwing for another year or more.

The Tesla post also confirms that the all-electric crossover will come in the same three battery varieties as the Model S sedan (60 kWh, 85 kWh, or 85 kWh Performance), with dual-motor all-wheel-drive standard across all variants (an option on the Model S).

It seems just about every time Tesla's readying a new car, the company pushes back the delivery date several times. That wouldn't be so frustrating if it wasn't for CEO Musk's habit of going off-script, saying or tweeting things that haven't been verified by his PR team or the realities of R&D. At this point, Tesla's would-be customers probably find none of this particularly shocking.
