New Honda Civic Type R Finally Happening, Ear-Tingling Teaser Video Released

2016 Honda Civic Type R

After years of teases, concept cars (here's the first and the second), and even a whirl behind the wheel of a prototype in Japan, we're finally going to get a look at the production iteration of Honda's European Civic–based Type R at the 2015 Geneva auto show. To accompany this confirmation, Honda released a video that sadly does not show the Type R in all of its glory, but instead gives us a taste of what the hot hatchback's new turbocharged, VTEC-equipped 2.0-liter sounds like as it revs toward redline.

A microsite set up to build anticipation for the Type R reveal claims the new engine is the "most extreme race-bred Civic engine in its iconic 18-year history." That's high praise for a motor unlikely to rev as high or aggressively as Honda engines past. On the upside, it's expected to throw down around 300 horsepower, and the redline is still a lofty—especially for a turbo car—7000 rpm. The Type R also will get a six-speed manual transmission, adaptive suspension dampers, and a "+R" button that activates a track mode. Both the redline and the +R switch are shown in the newest teaser video. Will some version of the car come to the U.S.? We'll need to wait and see, but a few hard-core Honda guys in America started a petition last year, so there's that.
