Ford Recalls 211,063 Cars for Door Handles, Loose Seat Belt Fasteners

Ford is recalling 210,980 vehicles in the U.S. for faulty interior door latches and seat belt fasteners, the automaker said today. The recall includes the 2010-2013 Ford Taurus, Taurus Police Interceptor, and Lincoln MKS, which have faulty springs in their door handles, as well as the 2014 Ford Transit Connect, which has seat belt fasteners that could loosen over time.

In the case of the Taurus, Police Interceptor, and Lincoln MKS, the door-handle return springs may loosen out of position and cause the doors to open during a side-impact crash, which could—as you'd expect—increase passengers' chances of injury. A total of 194,889 vehicles are affected, with another 10,056 in Canada and Mexico. Dealers will "repair or replace" all four door handles at an undetermined date.

Some seat belt fasteners might be loose on another 16,091 Transit Connect vans from 2014, all within the U.S. Ford said the fasteners could "loosen over time" and reduce the effectiveness of the belts during a crash. Dealers will tighten the fasteners on the seat belts and also the cargo floor tie-downs at a later date. Ford said there had no been reported injuries or crashes related to either of these recalls.

It did not elaborate on how it discovered the problems and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not post the filings as of today. This won't be the first brush with recalls for the Taurus and MKS—back in June 2013, Ford recalled the 2013 model-year Taurus and MKS for faulty child door locks. In May last year, as part of a recall spanning 1.3 million vehicles, the 2010-2014 Taurus (but not the MKS) was under recall for license plate lamps that could light on fire.
