Honda announced today that the all-new 2016 Honda Pilot will debut at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show next month. And just in time, our spies clicked off some shots of a camo-wrapped Pilot tester on the streets. Meet your new, less-boxy contender for family truckster dominance. As we reported back in August, this upcoming model marks the first major update to the fridgelike Pilot since 2009, and what was once the standard-bearer for unibody three-row SUVs is struggling at the back of the pack. Age and obsolescence call for an upgrade, and the spy photos show a rounder, slightly sleeker update to the upright Pilot, bringing its design in line with Honda's new CR-V and upcoming HR-V crossovers.
Like the first and second generations, the new Pilot's design and construction is an entirely U.S.-based affair, and Honda says it will showcase "new standout technologies, versatility, and dynamics currently unavailable in the mainstream SUV segment." No detail as to what exactly that means, though a tightening of the Pilot's driving characteristics would be a decidedly good thing.

At the Pilot's February 12th reveal in Chicago, Honda will also give us a glimpse at the "details and styling direction" for the upcoming Ridgeline truck-type-thing, which left the market in the 2014 model year and, like the outgoing Pilot it was based on, was quite ready for a refresh. Chicago is shaping up to be the place for family trucksters.
