2015 McLaren 650S Le Mans Evokes Legendary F1 GTR, Right Down to the Snorkel

2015 McLaren 650S Le Mans Edition
Two decades ago, the legendary McLaren F1 was not only an  exotic supercar for the street, but it was terrorizing the racetracks worldwide in F1 GTR form. In 1995, five McLaren GTRs raced across the finish line at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, taking 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th place. To commemorate the "vigentennial"—which isn't as dirty as it sounds—of this rather not-bad showing, McLaren is building 50 very special versions of its 2015 650S coupe, to be called 650S Le Mans.

In designing the 650S Le Mans, McLaren's MSO (McLaren Special Operations) division consulted F1 designer Peter Stevens, resulting in a 650S kitted out to mimic the race-winning F1 GTR #59. Rendered in metallic Sarthe Grey with a splash of McLaren orange on the Le Mans logo, the 650S Le Mans features "wing louvers," lots of carbon fiber trim pieces, and rides on a sweet set of Le Mans Edition lightweight five-spoke wheels (measuring 19 inches in diameter up front and 20 inches in back), which are designed in the likeness of the wheels on the racer. McLaren's carbon ceramic brakes are standard fare, squeezed by orange calipers. Our favorite mod by far, however, is the overhead snorkel-style air intake that feeds the prodigious, mid-mounted 3.8-liter turbocharged V-8 whilst providing "enhanced aural drama within the cabin." Clearly, a sound check is in order.

Besides the "enhanced aural drama," there's plenty of visual drama inside the black-and-orange, Alcantara-lined cabin as well. Le Mans logos are embossed on the headrests and floor mats and each car features its own dedication plate. And if that's not enough, customers will be invited to a special anniversary celebration at the Le Mans race this June. Sound alluring? Cough up some £244,500, or about $370K at today's exchange rates, and it can all be yours.
