Every year in January during the media preview of the big Detroit auto show, the winners of the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are announced. An independent jury of 48 automotive journalists judges the competition and they have winnowed down the lists to three finalists in each category for the 2014 NACOTY and NATOTY awards. The finalist cars are the Cadillac CTS, the Mazda3 and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the trucks under final consideration are the Jeep Cherokee, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Acura MDX. The trophies will be handed out to the winners on Jan. 13. The six finalists were selected from a list of 23 vehicles that are either all-new or substantially redesigned.
The competing vehicles are judged on innovation, design, safety, handling, comfort, value and driver satisfaction in a three step process, under the supervision of the Deloitte and Touche accounting firm. In the fall, eligible candidates are selected, in early December the finalists are chosen and then a final vote is taken. The award has been given out since 1994 and jurors pay $150 annual dues to underwrite the expense of the competition, which organizers say keeps the award free of manufacturer influence. Manufacturers do like the bragging rights that come with winning these awards. As a matter of fact, though the awards won't be given out for another month, when GM CEO Dan Akerson was announcing that Mary Barra would be his successor, he touted the fact that half of all the finalists and two of the three cars up for the award are GM products.
