Mercedes and Pebble Technology Collaborate on Watch that Keeps Time, Connects to Your Benz

If you're the type who keeps a close, ahem, watch—nailed it—on the latest and greatest tech to trickle out of Silicon Valley, the Pebble smart watch is likely already on your radar. If not, Mercedes-Benz's recently forged strategic partnership with the upstart watchmaker-cum-tech company may pique your interest.

On its own, the Pebble smart watch works as a second screen for your smartphone via a Bluetooth connection; to facilitate its integration with Mercedes vehicles and demonstrate the benefits of an intelligently networked vehicle, Mercedes developers have tweaked their Digital Drive app to communicate directly with the Pebble gizmo. Once connected, owners can view vehicle data such as fuel level, door-lock status, and vehicle location when away from their car. Once in the car, the smart watch employs V2V technology to notify drivers of real-time hazards such as accidents and road construction.

By entering into the partnership, Mercedes-Benz hopes to gain early access to some of the newest hardware and early releases of application programming interfaces offered by the Pebble, which will allow MB to develop integrated applications that might enable future in-vehicle uses. Pebble, on the other hand, gets a highly visible and credible notch in its watchband to add to the roster of more than 2000 apps already developed for its open platform. The system will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month.
