Effective January 1, 2014, Hyundai Motor America will have a new CEO at the helm: David Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales, who will replace current CEO John Krafcik (pictured above). The move, while somewhat unexpected to outsiders, apparently wasn't much of a surprise to Hyundai, who states simply that Krafcik "will step down upon the successful completion of his contract." Under Krafcik's leadership, Hyundai transformed from a budget brand to a desirable full-line automaker, capped by the addition of two full-blown luxury models, the Genesis and Equus sedans.

Hyundai doesn't say why Krafcik didn't re-up his contract—or if it offered him a new one—but his successor certainly seems qualified for the job. Zuchowski has overseen sales since 2007, a job he previously held at Mazda, and started his career at Ford 33 years ago. Whatever Krafcik's future endeavors, we wish him well; we're pretty sure Hyundai does, as well, given the explosive growth the automaker's experienced here under his direction.
