Audi will expand its lineup of crossovers with a subcompact model called the Q1, and this rendering provided by the company shows what it could look like. Based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, the Q1 will share its underpinnings with the VW Golf, the Audi A3, and a number of VW Group's upcoming compact vehicles such as the next-generation Audi TT.
The Q1 moniker suggests that the forthcoming crossover will be significantly more compact even than the Q3, which Audi will be bringing to American dealerships after an upcoming face lift that will ensure it can be classified as a "light truck." Considering the Q1 is expected to slot into Audi's lineup beneath the Q3, it's unlikely that the smallest of Audi's Q models would make it to the U.S. market—where size still matters.

Conceived as a four-door model, the Q1 will be offered both with front- and all-wheel drive, and will be powered by a range of turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline- and diesel-fed engines. Twenty-eight percent of all Audis sold globally are Q-badged crossovers and SUVs, and the addition of the Q1 in 2016 should help the brand achieve its goal of pushing Q sales to 35 percent of its business by 2020.
