With a 7.0-liter V-8 from Chevrolet's previous-generation Corvette Z06, the gearbox and suspension setup from the Camaro SS 1LE, and the gravity of a historic nameplate slapped on its ass, the upcoming Camaro Z/28 has performance enthusiasts on the edge of their heavily bolstered Recaros. To prove the Z/28's track credentials, the General shipped one off to practice in Germany at the famed and feared Nürburgring. How did it fare?
The track-biased, limited-edition Camaro Z/28 lapped the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 37 seconds. According to Chevy, that makes the Z/28 quicker around the 'Ring than the latest Porsche 911, in addition to outrunning the heavier, but more powerful ZL1—the Camaro that almost became the Z/28.
The Z/28's breakneck lap time comes on the heels of the results of Porsche's forthcoming 918 Spyder hybrid supercar, which reset the track record for production cars in September with a time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds.

Making no excuses for what Chevrolet describes as "damp pavement and pouring rain" when the hot lap was recorded, extrapolations from the brand's engineering team estimate that the Z/28 could be "as much as six seconds faster on a dry track."
