The vehicle you see above is a nasty C4 Corvette and mounted on its hood is a massive roots type blower, forcing massive amounts of air into its massive V8 powerhouse, which functions to better the vehicle’s sound, feel and above all its torque.

This root type blower is peculiar to other types of supercharging and brings air into the manifold, driven by the engine crank via belt and while taking in use lobe style compressors, it reduces friction and heat that results in a better flowing charge. More Images and video after the jump.

This roots type blower is originally designed in Indiana and was initially used as an air pump for blast furnaces and other industrial type applications. Though the root blower is the oldest form of vehicular forced induction, it is still a fuel-intensive system, which should only be used if you have deep pockets to buy all that gas for a few Nm of torque.
