In the ongoing conflict between the United Auto Workers and Nissan over the workers in the latter's Canton, Miss. plant, the union turned up the heat on the Nissan during the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
At this year's Automotive News World Congress gathering in Detroit, UAW president Bob King stated that there has never been a vote at the plant, nor did he believe that the workers there didn't want to unionize. Furthermore, he called out the automaker for their alleged hypocritical support of the United Nations Global Compact, of which Nissan is also a signatory, proclaiming that they "really put the fear of job loss in the mind of workers" were a vote to occur.
King, who will retire as head of the UAW early this year, also thanked the many international unions, such as Germany's IG Metall, for their continued support of labor representation in the United States.
Nissan called King's and the UAW's allegations "unfounded," stating that the automaker's history reflects the respect to the right of the autoworkers to decide if representation is in their best interest. They added that workers at the Canton plant "enjoy jobs that are the most secure in Mississippi," along with some of the highest wages and strongest benefits offered in the Southern state, and a relationship based on openness and transparency.
