Batteries Included: Cadillac Throws in Free Charging Station for First 1000 ELR Buyers

2014 Cadillac ELR

General Motors, hoping Tesla buyers might step out of line, is bundling a home charging station for the 2014 Cadillac ELR at no additional cost. The first 1000 buyers can now get a 240-volt charging station—specifically, a Cadillac-branded Bosch Power Xpress that runs up to 30 amps and lists for $949!—and installation costs covered up to $3000. Previously, this offer was only for the 100 Saks Fifth Avenue special-edition cars unveiled in November.

The extra cords come with the ELR's $75,995 base price or its new factory lease, which GM is offering at $699 per month for 39 months, at an effective cap of 10,000 miles per year. That's after a $5999 down payment and factors in the $7500 federal tax credit for electric cars, which GM, not the lessee, is allowed to claim.

ELRs aren't flying off showroom floors just yet. Six were sold before the end of 2013 after the car went on sale in late December, and GM says only a few dozen have been sold this month. Production of the Saks Fifth Avenue cars has just started. Given the ELR is the only luxury range-extended EV on sale in the U.S.—and at nearly double the price of the Chevrolet Volt upon which it's based—Cadillac has a long way to go to beat Tesla. But hey, it's sure easier than being Fisker.
