Though BMW has already registered trademarks for a range of i cars, from i1 through i9, BMW production chief Harald Krueger said that the German automaker will not add a third model to the i3 and i8 until it sees what kind of demand there is for those first two electrically powered, carbon fiber intensive cars.
"We need to see how demand for the cars develops," Krueger said. Reportedly BMW has so far spent about $2.7 billion on the development of its line of green cars. The first to go on sale, the i3, hit showrooms in November and BMW says that the 11,000 orders it has booked for the electric hatchback exceeds the company's expectations for the car and that there is now up to a six month wait for delivery. Krueger, however, would not give specific production figures for the i3.
Krueger said that the company has no plans to build the i3 in China. The i3 is currently assembly in Leipzig, Germany. In addition to that factory, BMW, through a partnership with SGL Carbon, has created an entire supply chain to make the carbon fiber reinforced plastic used in the i3 and i8. When asked if BMW had any plans of becoming a supplier of CFRP to other automakers, Krueger said, "We want to make our own use of the capacity for now."
