Alfa Romeo Rear- and All-Wheel-Drive Mid-Size Platform Gets a Name: Giorgio

Alfa Romeo 6C Concept Coupé rendering

We'd be okay with Alfa's mid-sizer looking like this 6C Concept Coupé.

As Alfa Romeo's never-ending U.S.-market reentry saga drags on, it appears the Italian marque is still working on its ballyhooed revival, based on a report from Automotive News. A big part of the brand's global resuscitation is its upcoming mid-size sedan model, which will spin off several other variations; we previously outlined this model's future, but AN says this car's architecture now has a code name: Giorgio.

Now, we had previously referred to Alfa's mid-sizer as "6C," a moniker we think will carry over to production. But AN, in addition to revealing the Giorgio name—perhaps inspired by the eponymous Italian producer and DJ?—also seems to indicate the platform will be shared with Dodge and Chrysler. Based on our intel, which indicates the Alfa Romeo 6C will use modified Maserati Ghibli bones, we think this tidbit is perhaps misinterpreted. AN's article is worded in such a way that suggests that Giorgio will flow from Alfa to Dodge and Chrysler. In reality, this is likely flipped; essentially, the so-called Giorgio platform won't be shared with Dodge and Chrysler, because it already is shared with Dodge and Chrysler, in that the donor Ghibli is itself adapted from the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger.

Jumbled wording aside, the AN article reiterates everything we already knew about the mid-size Alfa Romeo: It will come in regular sedan, four-door coupe, and two-door coupe body styles, and some or all of those will offer rear- and rear-biased all-wheel-drive layouts. This enthusiast-friendly layout, of course, is being employed so that Alfa can take the fight to German luxury marques like BMW and Audi, but only when (or if) the car arrives in 2015.
