What's bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a suitcase, and has a better power-to-weight ratio than the engine out of Formula 1 car? The Nissan DIG-T R, a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder that measures 19.7 inches tall, 15.7 inches long, and 7.8 inches wide. The Mighty Mouse motor weighs a mere 88 pounds, revs to 7500 rpm, and generates 280 lb-ft of torque.
Nissan will use the little guy to power its ZEOD RC hybrid at Le Mans in June. When Nissan first detailed the racer, it said the car had an "unspecified electric powertrain." The mystery electric powerplant will power the ZEOD for one lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe per fuel stint, which Nissan says will take about an hour. Apart from that single lap under electric power per fuel stint, the DIG-T R will propel the Nissan for the entirety of the race. Both power sources will utilize the ZEOD's five-speed transmission.

Nissan will use the race's Garage 56 entry, which is meant to encourage new technologies. The automaker didn't go into specifics, but it says it hopes to learn a great deal from its entry in the 2014 event that can be applied to its planned LMP1 racer that will contest the 2015 race.
