In the past two years, Renault-Nissan has been expanding a "technology partnership" with Daimler, resulting in a new turbo four for the Infiniti Q50, as well as Daimler gifting Nissan's luxury brand with the compact Mercedes A-class (CLA) platform. Now, a report from the Washington Post indicates Infiniti and Daimler's relationship could get far cozier in the next few years, given the two are working on a new shared platform.
Details on the platform, which doesn't appear to be the A-class architecture, are fuzzy at best, but Infiniti boss Johan de Nysschen did tell the WP that it would spawn four new models. One of those will be a crossover, which further leads us to believe this isn't A-class–related (that platform will underpin the upcoming Q30). That's because Infiniti's mid-size crossover, the QX70 (previously known as the FX37 and FX50) could use a roomier, more conventional replacement, and the Q70 neé M37/M56 sedan also will need replacing in a few short years. Given that Infiniti's first fruits of this new corporate mashup are due to arrive in 2017, the timing for a QX70 or Q70 replacement works out.
- Instrumented Test: 2014 Infiniti Q50S
- First Drive: 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid
- First Drive: 2013 Mercedes-Benz A-class
There's no word on what kind of access to this new platform Renault will have, or whether Infiniti or Daimler seem concerned by potential overlap between Infiniti and Benz, but we'll just have to wait and see the final result.
