In a recent interview with German magazine Auto Bild, Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen revealed that the maker's entry-level offering likely would debut in a little more than a year at the 2015 Detroit auto show. While discussing Tesla's current projects, von Holzhausen stated, "We are working hard on the the third-generation platform, the model that competes against the BMW 3-series." And while most outsiders figured it would wear a smaller cut of the Model S's distinctive duds, von Holzhausen's comments indicate otherwise. "It is not a small Model S, we do not want a unit face like Audi."

A smaller sedan, code-named "Blue Star," has been on the radar for a while now, and in an interview with Bloomberg earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk casually mentioned that such a car would retail for about $40,000 and have a range of about 200 miles. A debut a year from now in Detroit would dovetail nicely into a projected schedule of offering the car as a 2016 or 2017 model.
