Automakers love to dip into the precious metals for naming purposes. Porsche prefers platinum and as with the Panamera, it will offer a Platinum Special Edition version of the Cayenne.
For all the supposed cache that's usually associated with the Platinum moniker and the fact that this is a limited-edition model, Porsche is applying it here only on V-6-powered Cayennes. That includes both the gas version with 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and the diesel variant, which lists 240 horsepower and a healthy 406 lb-ft of torque in U.S. spec. In either case, the engine is backed by an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission.
Porsche packs its most popular extras into the Platinum Cayenne. Headlining the list are Bi-Xenon headlights, Power Steering Plus, Park Assist fore and aft, and paparazzi-foiling dark glass for rear-seat passengers. Exterior colors are kept calm—mostly variations on black and white—plus Meteor Gray Metallic and the somewhat contradictory-sounding Mahogany Metallic. The Platinum rolls on 19-inch Cayenne Design II wheels.

Keeping things simple inside, Porsche has "reserved" a Black/Luxor Beige two-tone interior for the Platinum. It can be had in partial or (optional) full leather with the appropriate floor mats and entry guards. The SportDesign steering wheel has shift paddles, while all headrests are embossed with the Porsche logo. Also standard is Porsche's communication management system, with its seven-inch touch-screen, navigation, and 11-speaker Bose audio system.
The Cayenne Platinum Edition will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2014. The gas V-6 model will start at $64,295 and the diesel V-6 at $67,895.
