Porsche has released a video detailing styling elements of its Macan compact crossover, which was launched at the L.A. auto show last month. Chief designer Michael Mauer, formerly of Smart and Saab fame, and head of advanced design Mitja Borkert describe a few elements of the Cayenne's little brother, which is based on the Audi-developed MLB platform.
Indeed, the overall shape is muscular and the greenhouse somewhat coupe-like, while the headlights are typical Porsche both in their contour and their internals. The taillights feature a three-dimensional horizontal strip, which the automaker says will become something of a styling staple in future Porsches.

The Stuttgart brand claims that the Macan combines "the best of Porsche race- and sports cars," citing the overlapping hood—which creates a clean surface down to the lower fascia—as well fenders that exceed the height of the hood. We'd say it is a classic example of turning a liability into an asset: both elements help Porsche comply with rigid pedestrian protection standards. It's a happy coincidence that this look might remind some of the legendary 917 race car, of which a model is prominently placed in the video below.
