Never a company to forget its past, Porsche has named its Le Mans prototype challenger the 919 hybrid. That follows on from 917, the first Porsche to win Le Mans (back in 1970), and 918 Spyder, the automaker's hybrid hypercar. Porsche also filled out its 919 driver line-up for the 2014 World Endurance Championship season. Making up the core of the crew are Porsche veterans Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, and Neel Jani, who are joined by former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber. Fellow newcomers are Marc Lieb and Brendon Hartley.

Underlining the importance of the 918 Spyder and 919 hybrid machines, Porsche head of R&D Wolfgang Hatz pointed out, "Maximum efficiency in energy consumption is the directive of the new WEC regulations for the works-entered class-1 prototypes—and that is also the direction for the automobile future."
