Now that we've seen the first variation on the Chevrolet Volt in the Cadillac ELR, General Motors is eager to further offset development costs by spreading the tech to more models. According to our sources, GM is working on adapting the powertrain for pickup trucks. We understand that the GMC Canyon will be the first such truck to go electric, and the truck maker will call it Canyon ERO (Extended Range Option)
The Canyon ERO will use the ELR's version of the powertrain, which consists of an 86-hp, 1.4-liter four-cylinder paired with a 181-hp electric motor fed by a 16.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that's good for a total output of 217 horses and 295 lb-ft of torque. While electric range in the ELR is capped at 35 miles and total range stands at a little more than 300, it's expected that the Canyon ERO will weigh in heavier than the Volt and ELR, and likely will only be able to travel 25 miles on electrons alone and 250 miles with the help of its internal-combustion engine.

General Motors has learned a few lessons from the introduction of the ELR that it will apply to the Canyon ERO. For starters, it will continue to chase upper-echelon shoppers, so the ERO will be available exclusively in Denali trim and we're told it will feature more leather and comfort than any GMC previous. "It smells like a steak and seats 35," our source says with a grin. GMC will, however, distance itself from the controversial marketing strategy behind the ELR epitomized by Cadillac's "Poolside" ad. Rather, we hear that GM is looking to spend big bucks getting a well-known but yet-unnamed comedian to shill Canyon EROs, and Hank Williams, Jr. has already signed on.
