Bye-Bye Car Wash: Nissan Develops Self-Cleaning Car

If an oven can clean itself, why not a car? That's a question Nissan engineers are working to answer. The automaker is developing a self-cleaning version of the European Note hatchback using a prototype paint that repels mud, rain and everyday road scum.

According to Nissan, the "super-hydrophobic" and "oleophobic" Ultra-Ever Dry paint creates a protective layer of air between the paint and the environment and stops standing water and spray from adhering to and marking the car's surface.

But don't get out your wallet just yet; the technology is currently being tested only in Europe by engineers at Nissan's Technical Centre; the automaker currently doesn't have production plans for the paint but it's investigating future applications.
