Famed for his mobiles, artist Alexander Calder accepted a commission in 1975 to paint an automobile. His touched-up BMW 3.0 CSL "Batmobile" went to Le Mans and kicked off a tradition that's included a veritable who's-who of contemporary artists mixing with BMW cars such as Frank Stella (1976, 3.0 CSL), Andy Warhol (M1, 1979), Jenny Holzer (V12 LMR, 1999), and Jeff Koons (M3 GT2, 2010). In all, 17 artists have lent their touch to Bavarian art cars over the past 39 years, and BMW is now getting around to releasing a book covering the project in its entirety.
Presented in conjunction with art publisher Hatje Cantz, the tome features a warp-drive–style cover designed by Mr. Koons and contains "a wide range of significant articles by international experts and art historians." Racing driver Hervé Poulain and former BMW Motorsport director Jochen Neerspach, the men who initially approached Calder, also get space in the 200-page book.

After premiering at Art Fair Paris Photo Los Angeles—yep, that's really the name of the show—last week, the book hits Amazon in early June at the fairly reasonable price of 45 bucks. (If that's too rich for you, know that all of BMW's art cars are now viewable online.) We should point out that the book's release comes just in time for Father's Day. Non-fathers, you'll need to find a different excuse to have someone buy this for you, or just use your own money. Either way, it should make a great coffee-table piece that you'll actually want to, you know, read.
