Name That Shifter, No. 175: 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo

Name That Shifter

1980 Jeep CJ-7

Shifter No 175On Monday, we presented this week's shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Many of you provided some decent guesses as to which car this week's shifter belongs to, but only Geoff Olson correctly identified it as a Jeep CJ-7′s stick. He will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The CJ-7 Laredo pictured here is from our November 1980 issue. An evergreen favorite for rock crawling and off-roading in general, the CJ-7 was a huge improvement from its predecessor, the CJ-5. Still, even with a new four-speed transmission, the Jeep could only muster a 19.8-second quarter-mile time at a wheezy 66 mph; 60 mph required 15.8 seconds. Although our test model shed a few parts during its stay with us, speed and build quality couldn't stand in the way of the CJ-7′s substantial fun factor.
