McLaren Special Operations Shows Off Hot-Ass 650S Coupe Concept

McLaren Special Operations Shows Off Hot-Ass 650S Coupe Concept

Eager to show off the growing list of upgrades available for the recently released McLaren 650S coupe and convertible Spider, the maker tasked its own McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division with creating a concept car to show off such wares. Currently making the rounds in China, this particular 650S and its features were all designed and engineered by MSO. (McLaren also debuted a similarly missioned 12C in December before that model was killed entirely this month.)

Created in house, the "Agrigan Black" exterior finish is composed of a dark black metallic infused with deep ruby-red metallic flake. Intended to deliver a dramatic color change effect in direct sunlight, it's augmented by satin-finished carbon-fiber bits. In addition to the standard car's front splitter and intakes, the MSO 650S concept's unique full-length carbon door blades also get the satin treatment. Their purpose is not purely aesthetic, as McLaren says they improve airflow for further aerodynamic efficiency. If the 650's purposeful posterior wasn't special enough, here it's fitted with an MSO-exclusive carbon-fiber diffuser. Special black lightweight wheels are shod with Pirelli P Zero Corsas.

Fixed-back, black carbon racing seats—based on the design of those found in the P1—position the driver lower in the car and offer a weight savings of 33 pounds. More matte carbon bits are sprinkled throughout the cockpit, as are gloss black switchgear and bezels. The engine bay is prettified with yet more black trim pieces and satin-black carbon fiber.

The usual applies here: McLaren says this is a one-off intended to gauge customer reaction to the accessories, but we assume a very vocal, very wealthy customer could have an identical 650S built. Those less inclined to be pushy, however, can up the carbon-fiber quotient of their 12C-based 650S—or their 12C, natch—with the $8600 side blades and $12,000 rear diffuser now.
