Watch Red Bull Explain F1′s Changes for 2014 Ahead of This Weekend’s Season-Opening Australian GP

Daniel Ricciardo

The Formula 1 circus is home to some of fastest-moving motorsports action on the planet, and that includes the rulebook. Unlike in NASCAR, where the series specs occasionally appear to have been carved in stone, regulations for F1 often change before the ink can dry. To keep fans abreast of the changes for the 2014 season, Infiniti Red Bull Racing called on its new driver Daniel Ricciardo to star in a short video that details the changes in computer-generated glory.

Accompanied by the voice of reigning champion Sebastian Vettel, Ricciardo runs through the changes while dashing around a computer-generated circuit. Pardon us if our excitement for the next season is showing, but we can't help ourselves from mentioning a few of the most intriguing changes for 2014: V-8s are out, to be replaced turbocharged V-6 engines with a maximum redline of 15,000 rpm; fuel capacity has been cut by 30 percent, and transmissions will now have eight gears instead of seven.

The aerodynamics, fuel delivery, and the ERS (Energy Recovery System) have been overhauled as well, but you'll have to give up three-and-a-half minutes of your day to watch the entire video and get the word right from the horse's, er, bull's, mouth. We recommend you do, lest you be uninformed when the lights go out Sunday at 1:30 a.m. Eastern on the NBC Sports Network.
