It's been almost 20 years since a new Alfa Romeo graced a major U.S. auto show, and so the 4C's New York debut next month will be treated as a papal visit. Not even the potential sighting of a LaFerrari or the new Huracán would equal the fervor from this mid-engined, sub-$60,000 Italian two-seater twirling on a Manhattan stage. Only if Pope Francis stepped out of the driver's seat would the scene look any more unbelievable.
Of course, "unbelievable" is Alfa's American nom de plume, having given us blue balls for the past 14 years with promise after broken promise of returning stateside with a full model lineup and dealers aplenty. In a tiny concession, Alfa shipped the 8C Competizione to 84 lucky insiders in 2008. During our first drive, we wrote Alfa would follow up with "mainstream cars that are most likely to begin arriving in 2010." Drinking from the Kool-Aid, we were.
- Instrumented Test: 2013 Fiat 500C Abarth
- First Drive: 2014 Maserati Quattroporte S Q4
- First Drive: 2014 Ferrari 458 Speciale
Fiat Chrysler will shill the 4C in U.S. Maserati dealers and perhaps a few of the 214 Fiat dealers will add some Alfa Romeo signage, in preparation for more new Alfas that haven't set a tire in the U.S. And while June is the 4C's official launch month, the weather could get too hot or the cappuccino machine in Milan could be on the fritz, so consider the date flexible. If Alfa fails again, at least you'll be able to say you saw one in New York.
