2015 Chrysler 200 Christened With EPA Fuel-Economy Figures, Delivers Up to 36 mpg

Chrysler's all-new 2015 200 sedan is one handsomely styled ride, and, it turns out, that sleek sheetmetal enables good fuel economy, too. Official EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 200 are out, and the base front-drive, four-cylinder model is capable of a class-competitive 36 mpg on the highway. Okay, so some credit likely is due to the 200's nine-speed automatic transmission, but we digress. Chrysler also released final efficiency figures for the V-6–powered 200, and even that car is reasonably efficient.

With the standard 184-hp, 2.4-liter four, the 200 is rated for 23 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway. The new 200's highway figure is 5 mpg better than the old 200's, although that car hardly was a paragon of efficiency. The new numbers put the 200 right in the thick of the four-cylinder, automatic transmission–equipped mid-size fray, competitive with the Ford Fusion (up to 25/37), the CVT-equipped Honda Accord (27/36 mpg), Toyota Camry (25/35), non-i-ELOOP regenerative braking system–equipped Mazda 6 (26/38), and the Volkswagen Passat powered by the new turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder (24/34).

As for the 295-hp V-6 model, it earns a respectable 19/32-mpg sticker; adding all-wheel drive (a rare option in the mid-size segment) drops those figures to 18/29. The V-6–powered Honda Accord makes 278 horsepower and gets an EPA-estimated 21/34 mpg. The 200 pulls slightly ahead of the Passat's 280-hp V-6, which gets 20/28, and the Toyota Camry's 268-hp V-6 with its rating of 21/31.

On the other hand, for the time being, the new 200 lacks a hybrid option—which is offered by Ford, Honda, Toyota, Kia, and Hyundai—or a diesel choice, as does the Passat and, soon (we hope), the Mazda 6.
