Smart Shows Off New Fortwo, Forfour Hatchbacks Winter Testing

2015 Smart Forfour prototype

Now, this is a bit strange: Smart has released visual evidence of the next-generation Fortwo and Forfour being winter-tested in Sweden—albeit wearing camouflage. It's the latest instance of a manufacturer essentially furnishing its own spy photos, but we're not complaining. This is our first good look at Smart's new city car since we last spotted prototypes testing in the wild, and those cars were haphazardly cobbled-together mules. These cars, on the other hand, appear to be production-ready examples covered only in a thin layer of black-and-white camouflage.

While it is clear the Smart Fortwo and the resurrected five-door Forfour retain their predecessors' goofy proportions (tall and narrow, kind of like an upside-down wheelbarrow), some of the details are updated. In fact, the squircle-shaped grilles, headlights, and taillights on both Smarts appear to be inspired directly by some of Smart's recent concept cars such as the FourJoy, FourStars, and Forvision. We previously reported that the cars would retain their rear-engine layout and three-cylinder power, and use a platform shared with the next-gen Renault Twingo.

Oddly, it doesn't look like the four-seat, five-door Forfour will make it to our shores—much to the chagrin of our nation's Smart dealers. Look for the 2015 Fortwo and Forfour to debut sometime this summer or early fall before going on sale here early next year.
