Despite our editorial obsessions—a comma here, correct verbiage there, etc.—we certainly can appreciate a good made-up word now and again, and Chevrolet's come up with a sweet one: Flowtie. A riff on the brand's signature bow-tie logo, the Flowtie is a cooling feature on the mighty 2014 Camaro Z/28 track car, and as the name suggests, it's a bow-tie-shaped cooling duct. Get it?

Essentially, it was discovered during the Z/28's development that removing the gold centerpiece from the bow tie in the grille resulted in a net cooling gain. How? Taking away the gold bow-tie insert left a bow-tie-shaped opening straight into the engine bay. The Flowtie was born, and it will be applied to production Z/28s. (You'll notice that the Z/28 that debuted at last year's New York auto show had the gold piece in place, while the example we've ridden in did not.) Simple as it seems, the Flowtie increases the grille's effective open area, and according to Chevrolet, lets an additional three cubic meters of air per minute slip under the Z/28's hood. This, of course, lowers engine and oil temperatures, but we're still glad it also led to the creation of "Flowtie." See it in action in Chevy's explanatory video below:
