Back in the Sixties, the van was the mobile residence of choice for those pursuing the "turn on, tune in, drop out" lifestyle. But according to a recent report in Automotive News, those memories may soon be giving way to the 21st-century needs of high-level executives and politicians who have little use for the shag-carpeted hallucinations of 20th-century slackers.
According to AN, one of the biggest Toyota-Lexus dealers in Japan is pining for Lexus-branded van, claiming that the Lexus LS sedan and timeworn V-12–powered Toyota Century limo are too small for entertaining large groups of people. A van, on the other hand, has the ability not only to serve as a limousine, but also as an impromptu meeting space and mobile office, as well a place to take naps and change one's wardrobe between events. The Japanese dealer claims fellow dealers throughout Japan, China, and other parts of Asia have also been petitioning Toyota to add this type of vehicle to the Lexus lineup.

Mercedes Sprinters converted to be limousines have become pretty common in urban area like New York and L.A., so the idea isn't that big of a stretch. Should Toyota go through with its dealers' requests, though, we'll be eager to see how long it takes suburbanite status-seekers to start swapping the Toyota badges on their Siennas for Lexus insignias.
