The rumors are true: At the Geneva auto show today, Jaguar has officially confirmed an upcoming, more compact sports sedan, designed to compete head-on with the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz C-class. It will be called the Jaguar XE.
Details are scarce, but Jaguar says that the XE will be available with a "variety of engines," including a new line of turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline and turbo-diesel engines dubbed "Ingenium." The automaker states that the XE features an aluminum-intensive unitized body architecture as was showcased in the C-X17 sports-crossover concept of 2013. We expect the production XE to see a mix of aluminum and steel.
The XE follows in the footsteps of the spectacularly unsuccessful X-Type, which was based on the European-market Ford Mondeo. This time around, Jaguar hopes to win over a lot more customers; the XE's design should be a strong point. All we have now is a teaser shot of the front end, which is strikingly similar to both the XF and the XJ.

The Jaguar XE will be unveiled later this year. It will hit U.S. showrooms in 2016 following a 2015 European market launch.
