Get . . . Smart? The Promise—and Idiocy—of the So-Called Smart Dashboard

Traffic cops can smell the baloney as soon as you roll down your window. In a few years, though, try hitting them with this one: "Officer, a computer ate my speedometer!"

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Audi showed an in­teri­or mock-up that would lend that excuse some credibility. On its concept buck, Audi shifted all infotainment controls from the car's center console to its instrument panel. There, instead of a central screen flanked by a large tach and speedometer, the company installed a full-width TFT monitor with enormous photos of phone contacts, supersized song displays, and a huge 3-D color map, plus two tiny gauges tucked in the corners because, yes, this cluster is still responsible for indicating engine rpm and road speed.
