The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that General Motors has–finally–stockpiled enough replacement ignition switches to fix the more than two million vehicles affected by its ongoing recalls. The agency says nearly 1 million recalled vehicles remain unrepaired.
NHTSA urges owners of 2003-2007 Saturn IONs, 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalts, 2006-2011 Chevy HHRs, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5s, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstices, and 2007-2010 Saturn Skys to immediately contact their dealership and arrange for the repair. Owners unsure whether their vehicle is part of the recall can use NHTSA's free VIN look-up tool at safercar.gov, or check GM's ignition recall web portal for more information, or call GM's information hotline at 14-800-222-1020.

Meanwhile, The Detroit Free Press reports that Ken Feinberg, who administrates GM's victim fund, just approved compensation for the 36th victim whose death was attributed to a GM ignition switch failure. The faulty component can cause a vehicle to inadvertently shut off while driving, disabling the car's power steering and brakes and preventing the airbags from deploying in a collision. Victims and families of victims claiming death or injury tied to an ignition switch failure have until January 31st, 2015, to file a claim.
