Tesla Roadster to Get Updates, Possibly Including New Battery Pack

Tesla Roadster may get 400-mile battery upgrade
The Model S has become the face of Tesla to such an extant that the Roadster, Tesla's first roadgoing car, seems like a footnote of sorts. That's selling the car short—it was a riot to drive, and its 245-mile range is still impressive. Elon Musk and company haven't forgotten about their early adopters, and there's apparently an update coming for Roadster owners.

The nature of the update is a bit unclear. It could simply be a software update; more interesting would be a battery-pack upgrade that Musk discussed back in October with Auto Express. In that interview, Musk claimed the company wants to make a "new-generation battery pack" upgrade available to owners, which would boost range to 400 miles. That would give it significantly more range than even the Model S.

Tesla's willingness to invest in developing a new battery pack for an older product has to be heartening for Roadster owners, although without knowing the cost it's not clear if it'll make sense for a significant number of them.
