He’s Back: Watch Two New Enigmatic McConaughey Lincoln Commercials

Matthew McConaughey Lincoln

Still trying to figure out what the hell Matthew McConaughey is talking about in those Lincoln MKC commercials? We'd suggest re-watching HBO's True Detective series—Matty clearly is channeling his crusty and abstruse Rust Cohle character for the Lincoln spots—but that might only add to your confusion. One thing's for sure: Lincoln has unequivocally cashed in on the actor's enigmatic rambling sessions/man-on-steer monologues. As Rust Cohle might say, "time is a flat circle," and "everything we've ever done or will do, we're gonna do over and over again." As a normal person might say, Lincoln has tapped McConaughey yet again, this time for a pair of ads for the MKZ sedan.

The commercials are making their television debuts on New Year's Day, right in the thick of college football broadcasts, and see McConaughey shining some of his star power onto the MKZ and MKZ hybrid. The more dialogue-heavy of the two ads covers the MKZ hybrid; titled "Balance," it treats viewers to an appropriately McConaugheyian monologue that—we think—largely is intended to promote the fulfillment the car bestows upon MKZ hybrid drivers, not the image of selfless environment-saving.

Considerably more brief, the second ad ("Diner") showcases the regular gas-fueled MKZ sedan and opens with McConaughey sitting idly in a café as rain falls outside. The rain stops, and McConaughey flicks his glass of water before rising and stepping coolly into the MKZ, opening the sedan's signature giant sunroof, and stating "There we go" in a gravelly drawl. What does it mean? Perhaps we're to be struck by light vanquishing darkness in the world, or assuaged by overtones of freedom, or maybe we're just supposed to look at the enormity of the MKZ's $2995 retractable glass roof panel and be impressed. Take a look at the new ads for yourself and watch for them on a TV near you starting on January 1.
