The Passat shown here was one of our long-term test cars way back in the early 1990s. After spending nearly a year with it, initially positive opinions soured. Gripes included the steering-wheel position, the 2.0-liter engine's sluggish 134 horsepower, and the car's thirst for oil, which it chugged at a rate of one quart per 4000 miles. The back seat earned praise throughout the test, however—just as the Passat's modern descendent recently impressed with its large rear quarters in another long-term test.
