The turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution may not have much life left in it, but at least it is getting a nice send-off. At least, that's the conclusion we reached after Don Swearingen, Executive Vice President for sales at Mitsubishi in North America, answered several inquiries from Jalopnik readers with tasty nuggets of future-product information. Swearingen says that the company is planning for a special-edition Evo model and that it will be launched in June or July of 2015 "as a going away edition."
The details are to our liking. The final Evo won't be fitted with the MR variant's dual-clutch automatic transmission. Says Swearingen: "It's a GSR five-speed." And there is more: "More horsepower, some suspension tuning, and some bits [and] pieces that are still being finalized." In its current state, the Evo's turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated for 291 horsepower—we fully expect the farewell edition to push out over 300 horsepower. There is no information on pricing yet, but it's safe to assume the unique model will cost more than the current Evo GSR, which retails for $35,305.

Also according to Swearingen, around 2000 units will be available, and we suspect that a lot of them won't remain in stock condition. (The Evo GSR is a rewarding object of modification and enhancement, and we see no reason why the fanboys Mitsu is targeting with the special edition wouldn't uphold the tradition.) But perhaps the final Evos' future owners would do well to keep the cars original. After all, there may never be another Evo, at least not as we know it. Mitsubishi is shifting its focus towards eco-friendly, hybridized appliances, and Swearingen claims that "There are currently no plans for an Evo XI."
